Current Events In The Sky

Venus continues to blaze in the evening and gets higher and brighter during June. Saturn is still visible in the western half of the sky at sunset along with Mars, although Mars is very dim and small now. In the early morning, Jupiter is the only bright planet left.

One June 26th the western half of some areas in North America will be treated to a partial lunar eclipse including western US. The pacific island and Asia will see the entire eclipse. Those along the US coast will see a rare treat as the lunar phase will be only half as the moon sets over the ocean. Maximum eclipse occurs at 4:38 PDT and will be just over 50% covered. The first day of winter in 2010 will be the next total lunar eclipse in the US.

The Bootid meteor show peaks on June 23 which could yield a few meteors this year. However, the nearly full moon will wash away most of them.
